Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the UK. About 1 in 8 women has a risk of developing a breast cancer in her lifetime.

Some of the factors that raise this risk are:

- Other family members being affected

- Women on HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy)

- Post menopausal women

- Life style factors like smoking, obesity and alcohol intake

Routine and frequent self examination for any lumps in the breast is easy to do. In addition, women aged 50 – to 69 years are offered a ‘screening mammography’ as the risk of a breast cancer is high in this age group. Approximately a third of patients with breast cancer are picked up by screening programme – and not by feeling a lump.

A woman referred to a Breast surgeon with a lump would have what is called a ‘Triple’ assessment – clinical examination by a Specialist / Breast Surgeon; an ultrasonogram and, in some cases, a biopsy.

Not all breast cancers need removal of entire breast tissue. Depending on the lump and the breast size, more and more women are offered breast conserving operations followed, in some cases, with Radiotherapy and / or chemotherapy.

For those women needing a mastectomy, there are increasing options of breast reconstruction – both as an Immediate (at the same time as mastectomy) or as a Delayed (a few months later / after completion of any radiotherapy or chemotherapy) reconstruction.

The focus now is to increase the awareness; treat the cancer (with surgery / radiotherapy / chemotherapy) and offer means of reconstruction to enhance the woman’s body image and improve the quality of life after the treatment.

Recent news stories have focused on the problem of a type of ‘faulty’ breast implants – called Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) implants. These French manufactured implants have been shown to be made of non-medical grade silicone. These implants have been used in approximately 40,000 women in the UK.

Current concerns are based on the fact that these implants have a higher rupture (breakage) rate – French authorities estimate this risk at about 5% but the UK authorities initially reported this risk around 1% only. However, recent information from Transform group suggest that this risk may be around 7%.

I have never used this type of implants in any of my patients. I understand that some women who have undergone breast surgery using PIP implants may be worried about their health risks. The UK authorities insist that there is NO increased risk of breast cancer in these women – but the implant covering is at a higher risk of breaking – leading to leakage of the gel material.

Those women who are concerned about the safety of their breast implants should verify any details that they may have from the initial operation. If they are able to reach their original surgeon or hospital where the implant surgery was carried out, it will be better to make that initial contact with them.

For others, it may be useful to contact a qualified Consultant Plastic surgeon or their own GP for advise. This may lead to any one of the following management options:

A professional consultation to assess any signs of leakage of the implant and, if needed, an ultrasound examination to confirm the same.

If the implant is found to be damaged, it needs to be removed.

IF it is still intact, the implants may be left alone / monitored after few months

Alternately, the implants could be removed as a precaution; in some women, after removal the remaining breast tissue could be ‘uplifted’ with no further use of any implant; in others, an ‘uplift’ could be combined with using a fresh pair of other, safer types of breast implants, to recapture the original appearance.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. It is appropriate for me, as Plastic surgeon and Breast Reconstructive Surgeon to add my voice to this cause.

Various studies have established the development of breast cancer to have some links with menopause, HRT, obesity, family history, alcohol and smoking. What is evident is that it is one of the commonest types of cancer affecting women in this country. That is why many women’s magazines and media discuss about the Breast awareness and regular self-examination. Even younger women are diagnosed with this cancer – so, breast self -examination is recommended for all age groups of women.

Studies show mammogram screening has helped reduce the mortality rate as it picks up the problem at a very early stage. Surgical techniques have also changed over time – trying to maintain the woman’s body image as much as possible. Options of breast reconstruction are given to patients early on in the treatment pathway – both by Breast surgeons and Plastic surgeons with a special interest in breast reconstruction surgery.

Most of the patients have the desire to get back to normalcy after going through the treatment including chemotherapy / radiotherapy and many of them opt for Breast Reconstruction to bring back feminine body image.

There are many options to reconstruct a breast shape. Breast Care nurses, Breast Surgeons and Plastic / Reconstructive Surgeons work together to support the women who request a reconstruction. This month, while there is a focus to raise the awareness of this cancer, let us also remember that ‘something can be done’ even after the cancer treatment.

It has been reported in various plastic surgery related publications that there has been an uptake in the number of people undergoing cosmetic procedures in the lead up to Christmas. This is a trend that has been evident in recent years as more and more people seek to achieve a better look for themselves in time for the festivities. Christmas also seems to be chosen as the time for surgery by many as it avoids the hassle of having to take time off work during the recovery period.

Now, although the time may be running out to have cosmetic surgery in Manchester in time for Christmas, many people are unaware about the positive short term effects that non-surgical procedures can have at this time of year. Many may feel a lot more comfortable undergoing these types of procedure as opposed to surgery such as a liposuction in Manchester or facelift in the North West if they are put off by the idea of ‘going under’ or having to spend a long period of time recovering.

JS offers two different types of non-surgical procedures, both of which target the appearance of the face. The face is one of the most prominent features of the human body and when it begins to age or become noticeably haggard, many people want to do so something about it.

Botox and facial fillers are used to help smooth out any creases/wrinkles which may have appeared due to a lifetime of human expressions. Usually within a matter of a few days the results will be recognisable – one of the reason why many people resort to such measures before attending occasions such as the work Christmas party.

A patient must be made fully aware of any possible risks that could occur with their choice of procedure, something which JS insists on. We all differ from person to person, making an initial consultation essential before any final decisions are made. This also provides a chance to assess whether a surgical procedure such as Blepharoplasty or face lift would be a better choice than he non-surgical procedures.

According to a recent survey carried out by Superdrug, the average women believes the best time to have cosmetic surgery is at the age of 52 years, 41 weeks and four days! While it is not such an ‘exact’ point in life, studies show that at least one in three women over 40 are so concerned about their appearance that they would consider having plastic surgery to give themselves a more youthful look.

Part of the reason why we are seeing an increasing amount of women over the age of 40 becoming conscious about their looks is being put down to the seemingly youthful appearance of celebrities such as Twiggy .

It could also be put down to the fact that many people feel under pressure to continually look good, whether due to the type of career they have or simply because of fear of ridicule from others. This is understandable as the ageing process begins to take its toll on us all in one shape or another as the skin loses the youthful elasticity.

One of the most common areas of the body that many people in the age bracket of 40+ want to target via cosmetic surgery in Manchester is the face. A facelift in Manchester is particularly popular as fine lines and wrinkles often tend to become more noticeable at this age and it can lead to some people looking somewhat haggard or tired. Non surgical techniques like Botox or eyelid surgery are also very popular in this quest to regain a ‘fresh looking face’.

Looking and feeling younger involves other areas of the body too. Surgical procedures such as a liposuction in Manchester or breast augmentation could enhance the appearance and boost your confidence.

Before committing to any of the above mentioned procedures it is crucially important that you set realistic expectations. Those expecting to look 20 years younger may be disappointed, but those with realistic and achievable goals will view cosmetic surgery as the most worthwhile of investments.

The Sun recently reported that a pageant with a difference is shortly due to take place in Budapest, Hungary. ‘Miss Plastic 2010’ is only open to contestants who have enhanced their looks with cosmetic surgery and who have medical notes from their operations to prove it. The winner will then go on to take part in ‘Miss Plastic Universe’ against competitors from across the globe.

We at JS Cosmetic Surgery, understand that many people who have been through some form of cosmetic surgery in Manchester will be keen to show off their new look and be proud to do so. However, competitions such as this set a dangerous precedent as they could be seen as encouraging people to revert to plastic surgery so they can compete in events such as this in a quest to achieve so-called ‘fame’. To use it as a route to vanity is a dangerous step to take.

Cosmetic surgery is more accessible nowadays and is no longer something only affordable to the ‘rich and famous’. Therefore, it has never been as important to fully evaluate the reasons why you may want to undergo surgery. Ignoring these could be detrimental to both your body and your mind.

Health

Certain procedures can help overcome health problems. For example, a Breast reduction in Manchester or Tummy tuck in Manchester could improve a better body proportions that allows a renewed interest in keeping fit.

Self confidence

Sometimes we suffer from a lack of confidence in ourselves due to the look of our bodies and this can affect our lives in many different ways. Cosmetic surgery has been known to give people a new lease of life and has the ability to put a smile back on the face of recipients. People who are worried about the shape of their nose, for example, may consider having a Rhinoplasty in Manchester (Nose job).

Refreshed appearance

Due to things such as weight loss or pregnancy, certain areas of the body lose some of the firmness and good looks that they once had. Diet and exercise would be advocated before you contemplate going under the knife, but sometimes no matter how hard you try, excess weight can be impossible to shift. A tummy tuck in Manchester is just one example of how cosmetic surgery could bring new life to your body.

We take our ears for granted! We rely on them to help make us aware of everything that is going on around us. However, aesthetically they can sometimes have a negative impact on our appearance, particularly if they stick out prominently. Such appearances have lead to comments like ‘Mug ears’ or ‘Bat ears’. This can make you feel paranoid and affect confidence, especially if you feel when speaking to people that their attention is being directly diverted to the look of your ears.

A prominent ear correction is a form of cosmetic surgery in Manchester, which aims to change the shape or position of the ears accordingly. This procedure is commonly performed on children to help prevent teasing or bullying at school, but many adults will also find benefits from it as many will try to cover up their prominent ears with their hair or a hat. It is vital to ensure that any child put forward for this procedure is fully committed to it and happy for it to go ahead without undue pressure from parents. It is best done around the age of 6 to 8 years.

The way the procedure is performed will depend upon the problem faced. It usually involves an incision being made in the back of the ear and a sculpting of the cartilage to help bend it back towards the head. Any scars present after the surgery will usually fade over time and blend into the natural colour of the skin. Occasionally, the scar may become lumpy (keloid scar) or the ear may spring back to the original form, needing a second procedure.

Bandaging will be placed around the patient’s head to ensure that the ears heal properly and settle into their new shape. The recovery period will usually take around a week and bending of the ears should be avoided for around six weeks.

Although like a facelift in Manchester or breast uplift in Lancashire perfection is not guaranteed, an ear correction could result in an improved symmetry between the two ears. It may also make you feel that little bit more confident about yourself.

Looking good does not always need a cosmetic surgery. In addition to healthy living habits, there are other non-surgical procedures that can help to give a ‘refreshed’ look.

Many people are immediately put off by the word ‘surgery’, no matter how keen they are to achieve a better look for themselves. The idea of having a facelift in the North West may be too much for some, even if they have creases and wrinkles they would love to have smoothened out in order to achieve a more youthful appearance. JS is able to offer alternative options to those who fear ‘going under’ a scalpel.

Facial fillers in the North West have particularly risen to prominence as they can help hide the effects of the ageing process in the face. Popular Chef and Restaurateur, Gordon Ramsay recently admitted to having this form of non-surgical procedure when his kids started to try and squeeze pound coins into the deep furrows in his forehead and chin.

Fillers can be injected under the skin to help improve the contour of the face, flattening out those lines that tend to appear as we get older and the skin becomes looser. Temporary or permanent fillers can be used depending on the severity of the situation. Many people develop ‘expression’ lines while smiling or showing surprise. Some people suffer from such lines even when their face is resting without any expressions.

One of the other great advantages that fillers have over surgical procedures such as a facelift is that any improvements will be subtle, so that people who see your new appearance will not immediately be saying to themselves’ they must have had some work done’. They may instead just think that you look after yourself and maintain a healthy diet.

JS Cosmetic surgery also specialises in providing other non-surgical procedures such as botox. For further questions on this or any forms of cosmetic surgery in the North West, please contact us via the online form.
